The Gardens &
Parkland
One thousand acres of Hampshire countryside, shaped by Capability Brown and tended by generations of the Carnarvon family.
The gardens and parkland at Highclere are as much a part of the estate's story as the castle itself. Capability Brown's 18th-century landscape design created the rolling lawns, ancient cedars, and serpentine lake that frame the castle so perfectly. Within the parkland, a series of more intimate gardens — walled, secret, and formal — offer moments of quiet discovery.

The Capability Brown Parkland
The sweeping parkland surrounding the castle was designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown in the 1770s. Ancient cedar trees, rolling lawns, and the serpentine lake create the quintessential English landscape.

The Walled Garden
A hidden gem within the estate, the Victorian walled garden has been lovingly restored. It produces flowers, vegetables, and herbs for the castle, and is a tranquil retreat from the wider parkland.

The Secret Garden
Inspired by the famous novel, Highclere's Secret Garden is a romantic, enclosed space filled with climbing roses, fragrant herbs, and a sense of timeless seclusion.

The Monks' Garden
A formal garden of clipped yew hedges, topiary, and stone paths, the Monks' Garden provides a structured counterpoint to the naturalistic parkland beyond.
Visiting the Gardens
The gardens are included in the standard castle admission ticket. The parkland is at its most spectacular in spring, when the bluebells carpet the woodland floor, and in summer when the walled garden is in full bloom.
