About

Conservation

Caring for the Highclere estate — its landscape, wildlife, and built heritage — for future generations.

The Carnarvon family has been stewards of the Highclere estate for over three centuries. Conservation — of the landscape, the wildlife, the historic buildings, and the cultural heritage — is central to everything the estate does. The 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon are committed to passing on the estate in better condition than they found it.

Conservation Initiatives

Woodland & Parkland

The estate's ancient woodland and Capability Brown parkland are managed under a long-term conservation plan, protecting veteran trees and encouraging natural regeneration.

Wildlife & Biodiversity

Highclere is home to a rich variety of wildlife, from red kites and barn owls to rare wildflowers. The estate works with conservation organisations to monitor and protect its biodiversity.

Wildflower Meadows

Traditional wildflower meadows have been restored across the estate, providing vital habitat for pollinators and contributing to the estate's natural beauty.

Water Management

The estate's lakes and watercourses are managed to support aquatic wildlife and maintain the landscape's hydrological balance, including the serpentine lake designed by Capability Brown.
